Roxanne

Five days. It had been five days since she’d humiliated herself in front of Tieg, and she hadn’t heard from him since. Her face heated at the mere thought.

She’d thrown herself at him. She’d opened her heart and revealed to him her feelings. She’d known there was a risk of rejection, there always was, but she honestly didn’t expect it. Not from Tieg. Not from the man who’d followed her to Pawleys Island. Not from the man who had singlehandedly prevented the police from letting her case go cold.

And that line of thought led her around to the question: if he’d done all that, why did he run like a scared lamb when she’d kissed him?

Was she that repulsive? Had he built her up in his mind so much, that when she actually kissed him, the reality didn’t live up to his expectations? If that was the case, he hadn’t given her much of a chance.

She sighed and flung herself on the couch. She should just call him. She had his number. She could easily call him and ask if he’d heard anything else from the private investigator. Or text him. That would be less embarrassing if he didn’t respond.

Frustrated, her eyes landed on the Bible that still sat on her table from his visit. She leaned forward and grabbed it, then slouched back on the couch. She flipped it open, trying to remember the verses they’d read together.

Where was it? Psalms; he’d said his favorite verse was in Psalms. She flipped to the book, then scanned the chapters. There it was – Tieg’s favorite – Psalms 46, just like he’d said: ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.’

She sat quietly, letting the words flow over her. Refuge – a safe place to hide when you’re alone, or in danger. Like a blanket to pull over yourself when you’re cold. She liked the thought of God being a refuge, and a strength, of course. God was strong. When His people were in trouble, He was present.

Her eyes skimmed that verse over and over again, trying to think of it as Tieg would. He’d picked it out, his favorite Bible verse. And unlike her, he’d probably read a lot of them. All of them? Had Tieg read this whole Bible? And if he had, what things had he learned that she could never relate to, because she had never had God in her life?

But Tieg had suggested a different verse for her. Which was it? She turned the page, searching for it. Although she was good at memorizing lines – a requirement in her profession – she hadn’t memorized the verse. She’d only seen it the once, but she thought she’d recognize it if she saw it again.

How could she possibly find it? There were a million verses in the Bible, she guessed. But this was important. She settled down to read. She read the next Psalm and the next, and she kept turning pages until something made her heart sing.
